We are proud to have won the 1st ever Chilvers cup, in honour of our club member Graham Chilvers. The handicapped tournament had a very high standard, featuring a county-standard player in almost every team. The initial round of matches saw a tough start against St Phillips which we lost, but rallied well to beat all other teams with the exception of Sparta. We were convinced we would be out once the handicaps were added up, but it turned out we squeaked through to the final, to face Sparta once again who were mostly unbeaten.
The final match saw an upset win from Steve & Leigh beating Tomas & Uday 21-12 in an intense high pressure game, having previously lost 17-21 to this same pair earlier in the day. The ladies was a narrow loss - 16-21 I believe but still meant we were definitely in the running when you consider points scored.
The mixed doubles was a nailbiter in both games.... Leigh & Debbie put in a blinding performance to finish 20-21, scoring as many points as possible. Similarly, Steve & Jo were 11-19 down but dug deep to claw all the way back to 20-20, at which point a brilliant unexpected shot from Uday sealed the game 20-21. As it turned out, even without our handicap, we had achieved victory in terms of number of points won
The day was really enjoyable, although the next day all 4 of us complained of frozen shoulders, painful glutes and comedy walking! Worth it though!
